Social Media, eh? Some people say it’s anti-social and just people sitting behind a computer screen retweeting stuff! I guess there is an element of that, but get this….!
The other night was far from anti-social. I had the pleasure and privilege of attending the Torbay Hour Social Media Awards – hay, not just attending – I was actually shortlisted in the ‘Love Torbay’ category! Okay so I lost out to a very deserving winner – but that’s not the point. The point is… I was there! Yes, little old me amongst some big names in the Bay. That made me feel anything but little…
And of course, to make me feel even bigger – or should I say taller – I could probably have won the unofficial award for the highest heels of the evening!
So where am I going with this… well up until about a year ago I didn’t do a great deal on social media myself to be honest. Couldn’t really see the point in pinning, and twittering, Linking in and all that kinda thing. I was too busy wandering alone on beaches and taking photos in my spare time! Then slowly I started to think it might be kind of cool to share some of my stuff around the Bay… I had some quirky ideas for writing, and some pretty pictures going on – why not let other people see this too…?
So wind the clock forward – and a year on – to be nominated for a ‘Love Torbay’ award was pretty special really, after all, a year ago not many people really knew who I was! Helen who?! Through social media in the Bay I have met some pretty cool people too – and people who know that I love Torbay!
I guess the moral of the story is this….. if this is what social media has done for me in such a short time, imagine what it can do for business too.
